Electives & Global Health

Residents have elective time to tailor their learning toward their career goals. We are very open to finding new elective opportunities and will support residents in finding additional training related to their particular interests. With the recent ACGME changes that increased elective time, this is a growing portion of the curriculum.

• Electives can be spent with specialists and other healthcare professionals. Residents can get guidance from their advisor and Associate Program Director to help tailor their elective experiences for their own professional goals.
• Many residents use elective time to learn about different models for practicing family medicine and can utilize electives to explore future job experiences.
• There are opportunities to participate in gender affirming care through the Transgender Specialty Clinic at St. Peter Family Medicine. Residents also receive didactics about gender affirming care to gain competency in caring for transgender patients.
• Residents can do away electives for Global Health Experiences.
• Residents participating in the OB Track are encouraged to use elective time for additional obstetrical rotations.
• Residents interested in inpatient medicine are encouraged to spend additional elective time on inpatient medicine including working in the open ICU in Centralia and in the ICU in PSPH.
• Residents interested in Addiction Medicine often spend elective time with our community partners in both Centralia and Olympia and can work with the Street Mobile Clinic in Olympia to build their experiences.
• Residents interested in teaching can utilize elective time for Junior Precepting to build their teaching skills
