Obstetrics Curriculum
As a rural program with a close connection to our local obstetrics group,
our OB curriculum affords those looking to practice OB with a vast range
of learning experiences to gain confidence and competence in performing
vaginal deliveries after graduation. Residents have rotations in Obstetrics
in all three years, which allows them to obtain and maintain the skills
needed for perform deliveries upon graduation per the ACGME guidelines.
Inpatient Obstetrics:
- PGY-1 Year: Starting intern year, residents gain experience on OB rotations
completed at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA. Here, they
work closely with multiple obstetrical groups, family medicine clinic
OB providers, midwives, and OB hospitalists. As a part of their OB rotations,
they are involved in managing patients in OB triage/ED, admitting patients
to the labor and delivery floor, performing vaginal deliveries, assisting
in C-sections, and rounding on postpartum patients and newborns. (8 weeks
day shift, 4 weeks night shift)
- PGY2-3 Years: During 2nd and 3rd year, residents complete their OB rotations
at Providence Centralia Hospital where residents receive a lot of autonomy,
working directly with their attendings. They manage patient care in the
OB triage, in the labor and delivery rooms, and during postpartum. Residents
cover surgical call during their obstetrical rotations in their 2nd and
3rd years to first assist for c-sections two nights per week during their
dedicated OB rotations. (PGY2 6 weeks day shift, PGY3 4 weeks day shift)
Prenatal Care:
-
CFM OB Continuity Patients:
Residents care for prenatal patients in their own continuity clinic at
Chehalis Family Medicine and are involved in their deliveries as well
as postpartum care.
(PGY1-3)
-
CWC OB Continuity Patients: Residents spend additional time with our local
obstetrical group (Centralia Women's Center) in their office to gain skills
in managing obstetrical patients in a high-volume practice in Centralia.
This provides residents with additional opportunities to build rapport
with patients and ask to be called in for additional continuity deliveries.
(PGY2-3)
OB Track: Residents can opt to participate in the obstetrical track and utilize elective
time to gain additional obstetrical experience to ensure they can obtain
ACGME competency in obstetrical care. This track allows more time with
our obstetricians, more flexibility during OB rotations and the opportunity
to participate in Adolescent OB group appointments with the St. Peter
Family Medicine Program in Olympia, WA.
