"My decision to complete residency at PSVMC was based on the amazing
mentorship, sponsorship and comradery I noticed on my interview day. From
nurses to residents to attendings, it was clear that people were happy
to be working at St Vincent. I also hoped that the unique combination
of a small program in a large tertiary care center would allow for a robust
and challenging educational experience, with the added benefit of close
relationships with faculty. I was undecided in my career path and knew
that working with specialists and faculty who knew me well and had a genuine
commitment to my success would be of the upmost importance. As it turns
out, my training at PSVMC offered all those things and more. I explored
Nephrology, Pulm/CC and Cardiology as I considered fellowship versus a
career as a hospitalist. My mentors in those fields were very supportive
and helped me gain clinical experience to really understand what each
field offered. I was supported in all my leadership and educational endeavors
and excitedly accepted the role of Chief Resident. It was during my Chief
Resident year that I realized just how important a career in medical education
was to me, and that hospitalist medicine would allow me to strike a balance
between clinical and educational work. Fast forward 3 years and I am now
core hospitalist faculty at PSVMC. I couldn’t be happier with where
I’m at in my career, or the amazing journey I took to get here."
2017 - 2018 Chief Resident, Stephanie Griffith, M.D. Hospitalist Faculty,
Providence St. Vincent Internal Medicine Residency
"Residency training at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center helped
me develop a strong foundation for my hospitalist career. I developed
the skills necessary to excel through exposure to a variety of patient
populations and scenarios. While there was ample specialist support, opportunities
were also provided to work independent of specialists, ultimately preparing
me to work in a variety of clinical settings. Residents were afforded
flexibility to customize training with emphasis on ICU-level care, research,
quality improvement, critical access care, or outpatient medicine, among
other areas of focus. I focused on inpatient medicine which allowed me
to develop the knowledge and skills to manage complex cases in both rural
and urban settings in multiple hospital systems across Oregon. The clinical
and procedural skills from the ICU rotations are especially helpful to
me while working at critical access hospitals and hospitals with fewer
resources. I was grateful for the residency program's prioritization of
wellness because I was able to share quality experiences with my family
during training. As a father of four, a healthy work-life balance was
essential during training. The program leaders were compassionate, supportive,
and understanding, not only towards their patients, but also towards residents
and medical students. Furthermore, the culture of this hospital is like
none other. I was impressed by the outstanding professionalism and collegiality
from the staff. This gave me confidence in my decision to join the hospitalist
team at Providence St. Vincent following residency training. The excellent
and well-rounded training from this program prepared me to contribute
meaningfully into the lives of my patients." Nathaniel Edwards, MD; graduate - Providence HospitalistVincent Internal Medicine Residency
