4+1 Scheduling Model

We have responded to meaningful feedback from our residents and have adopted a modified four plus one scheduling model this year for senior residents on their wards rotations. This model will allow the senior residents to spend four weeks on inpatient wards without having any interruption related to seeing patients in the ambulatory care setting. Every ward block will then be followed by a full week of Continuity Clinic where residents will see their own clinic patients without any conflict from clinical work in other areas. This week of Continuity Clinic will be scheduled sometime in the following block with a focus on maximizing resident scheduling flexibility and continuity with their clinic preceptors.

It is our belief that this scheduling model strikes an effective balance between maintaining resident continuity with their patients while also decreasing the inherent challenge of being pulled in multiple directions to simultaneously care for patients on the wards and in the clinic.
