At Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, we take great pride in our commitment to teaching. The Faculty, House Staff and administrative personnel in the Department of Medicine look forward to helping you in every way possible during this rotation.
We are a major teaching affiliate of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and Washington State University (WSU), Western University and routinely host third- and fourth-year visiting students for their required core medicine rotations, both on the General Medicine Wards and in the Intensive Care Unit. Additionally, we have opportunities for fourth year students to rotate in our Primary Care Medical Home outpatient clinic for select blocks during the academic year. Students who are considering a residency at Providence St. Vincent are encouraged to apply for a rotation.
Third-year students come regularly from OHSU and WSU for four-week clerkships on the medicine wards. We also welcome third-year students from other LCME accredited institutions to apply for a ward rotation with start dates beginning in February. Fourth-year students are also welcome to apply for a Sub-Internship rotation on the Medicine Wards, ICU, and in our outpatient clinic.
Students are integrated into day-to-day team activities at Providence St. Vincent, including attending teaching conferences, obtaining H&Ps, writing progress notes, and developing plans for diagnosis and therapy. Students attend and contribute to morning report, noon conferences and teaching rounds. In addition, the medical students receive special student-only teaching sessions by select medical education faculty, which focus on core internal medicine topics, physical diagnosis and evidence-based medicine.
We have general medicine rotations available to third-year students beginning in February.
Fourth-year student rotations:
Students on their medicine clerkship or sub-internship join one of the
three ward teams, two of which are on our Accountable Care Unit (ACU).
The ACU is an innovative model for medical education and patient centered
care. The geographic hospital unit emphasizes team-based care and includes
structured interdisciplinary bedside rounds (SIBR). In the ICU, the student
is fully integrated into the unit’s care team organization consisting
of three interns, one resident and the Intensivist. In both the ward and
ICU setting, you also work directly with our nursing staff, nurse care
managers, and ancillary services and will be responsible for presenting
your patients during multidisciplinary rounds.
In our ambulatory clinic, you work directly with our core faculty attendings
and alongside our residents providing direct patient care. Our medical
home model allows you to also work directly with our medical assistants,
nurses, receptionists as well as our clinic pharmacist, behaviorist and
social worker in providing excellent team-based care to your patients.
Before students begin this rotation we pre-build and schedule patients
specifically for the students to maximize opportunities.
Students are not required to take overnight call. They are encouraged to come in on weekends when their team is on call. Late call is every third night in the ICU; and twice per week on the medicine ward teams.
The program does not provide housing for visiting students.
Visiting students wishing to apply for a clerkship rotation must complete the application form along with the supplemental documents and return it to the Department of Medicine at Providence St. Vincent as directed on the application. Please note that incomplete applications will not be processed.
U.S. LCME accredited and osteopathic medical school students: Medical students from U.S. LCME accredited schools and U.S. osteopathic medical schools may apply for a rotation.
International Students: Unfortunately, we are unable to offer International Students visiting rotations for the 2024-2025 Academic Year.
We will begin to accept applications for the upcoming academic year (July 2024 to June 2025), on February 12, 2024.
We will begin reviewing applications and notifying students if they have been accepted for a 2024–2025 academic year clerkship rotation on or after May 4, 2024.
Visiting student rotations are scheduled for a duration of four weeks. The following are dates to be used when submitting your application. Unfortunately, we cannot go outside of these rotation date blocks.
