Providence Portland Medical Center annually offers four one-year preliminary internship positions for applicants planning to continue with specialty residency training elsewhere. The unique culture of teaching at Providence Portland fully engages all who join us -- including those who are with the program for a preliminary internship year.
Our goal is that the experience of our "prelims" is as rich and challenging as that of our categoricals. The proportion of time spent during the preliminary year managing patients in the inpatient setting, including critical care exposures, and in the outpatient clinic setting is similar to that experienced by our categorical PGY-1 house staff. Similarly, the same elective opportunities and robust subspecialty interactions exist for all interns in the PGY-1 year. The elective time during the preliminary internship year is generous and can be tailored to the particular career goals of the physician. Preliminary year residents spend their outpatient clinic time in the PMG-NE clinic providing urgent and acute care. Wherever the venue, each member of the PGY-1 class is given equal responsibility.
Providence Portland Medical Center ’s preliminary year tract continues to draw wonderfully talented applicants and to send them, as graduates, to specialty training programs across the nation.
