Academic Training in a Leading Community-Based Medical Center

Welcome! On behalf of the faculty, residents, and staff of the Department of Medical Education at Providence Portland Medical Center, thank you for your interest in learning about our residency program. Since 1971, we have been a leader in internal medicine training in the Pacific Northwest. Training at Providence Portland Medical Center creates a unique learning environment where the intellectual rigor of an academic medical center combines with the cutting-edge health systems of a top community hospital to offer the highest quality residency experience and education.

At Providence Portland, our mission is to train compassionate, evidence-based physicians who provide exceptional care to our patients and contribute to our community and society as teachers, leaders, and advocates. To achieve this vision, our curriculum emphasizes rigorous clinical experiences, strong educational didactic and experiential learning, mentorship, role modeling and an emphasis on training our residents to be teachers. We balance clinical exposure to outpatient general medicine, inpatient medicine and internal medicine subspecialties with understanding of the health care system, evidence-based medicine and quality improvement. Our residents' careers testify to our success in this quest.

Providence Portland Medical Center has a longstanding commitment to supporting medical education, particularly resident training, as evidenced by our high faculty to resident ratio. This commitment is a major source of strength for our program and has allowed us to recruit and retain outstanding medical educators. We also benefit greatly from the enthusiastic support of our subspecialty colleagues and hospitalists who actively participate in teaching our residents.

Providence Portland Medical Center’s dedication to education is exemplified by the endowed Garnjobst Chair of Medical Education which supports our Department Chair. You can learn more about Dr. Garnjobst and the endowed Chair named in his honor by following the link below.
