Our goal is to provide you with an outstanding clinical education, opportunities for scholarship, and mentorship in a supportive academic environment where you can grow into an exceptional physician. We believe in training well-rounded physicians with the competence and confidence to pursue future careers in a variety of settings. These settings include inpatient medicine, primary care, fellowship training, academic medicine, and clinical leadership. Our graduates are highly sought after and those not applying for fellowship often have several job offers in the first six months of their senior year.
As a learning community, we hold ourselves to high academic standards and an evidence-based approach to medicine. Our faculty have substantial dedicated time for teaching and mentoring our residents and the numbers of patients you see in inpatient and ambulatory settings are optimized for a good balance between case variety and time to spend with and learn about your patients. We enjoy working closely with our residents longitudinally to facilitate your growth into proficient and compassionate physicians.
At Providence Portland Medical Center, one of our core values is to care for all, especially the poor and vulnerable. We have focused efforts on anti-racism work and building connections with community organizations to deepen our understanding and opportunities for service. We train our residents to be teachers and lifelong learners through our teaching-to-teach curriculum and our “Residents as Teachers” certificate program. We promote scholarship and inquiry through quality improvement work and opportunities for research. Our residents have won multiple awards and frequently present posters and podium presentations at regional and national meetings. We have a long history of educational excellence and continuously strive to incorporate new ideas into our teaching; we value resident voices and feedback to tailor your learning experience.
Our residents practice in one of the top academic hospitals in Oregon, which serves as a regional referral center. The Providence Cancer Center is nationally recognized as a leader in cancer care and immunotherapy research. Our ICU cares for some of the sickest patients in Oregon and is a leader in ECMO care. Our residents learn to perform many procedures that are often reserved for fellows at other institutions. As the only residency based at Providence Portland, you work side by side with our specialists in a rich learning environment. The beautifully green city of Portland serves as the backdrop for our training program. Portland has many unique and friendly neighborhoods, and a thriving food scene. The outdoor opportunities for hiking, cycling and winter sports are endless.
