Message from Program Director Dr. Courtland Childers

Welcome to the Providence Portland Internal Medicine Residency Program

I am thrilled you are exploring what makes our residency community unique and what your training could look like with us.

Providence Portland is a community-based academic program in East Portland, caring for a diverse patient population across the full spectrum of internal medicine. As the only residency program based at our hospital, our residents take the lead on patient care across settings and specialties. You will work closely with dedicated faculty and specialists, building clinical confidence early and expanding your skills throughout training.

Our curriculum prepares graduates for a wide range of careers, from hospital medicine with open ICU care, to primary care, academic medicine, or fellowship. Whatever your path, you will have personalized mentorship from faculty who are deeply committed to your success.

We are proud of our rigorous academic environment. Our hospital serves as a regional referral center with nationally recognized programs in cancer care, critical care, and research. Experienced clinician-educators foster inquiry, evidence-based practice, and continuous learning, combining the depth of a university training experience with the close-knit community of a smaller program.

As someone who trained here, served as chief resident, and spent ten years as associate program director, I know firsthand how transformative this program can be. Our graduates leave with strong clinical skills, a deep fund of knowledge, and the confidence to lead. Many have become leaders in medicine across Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.

At Providence Portland, you will join a supportive, collegial community where your growth matters. We would be honored to show you what makes our program special and to help envision your future here.

Warmly,

Courtland Childers, MD
Program Director
Providence Portland Internal Medicine Residency Program

Welcome! We are delighted that you are exploring the Providence Portland Internal Medicine Residency program for your residency training. Our goal is to provide you with an outstanding clinical education, opportunities for scholarship, and mentorship in a supportive academic environment where you can grow into an exceptional physician.

We invest heavily into our faculty, who help create a wonderful educational environment for our residents. With a high faculty-resident ratio and substantial faculty time dedicated to teaching and mentorship, our faculty serve as mentors and coaches throughout your education. Faculty wellness champions support class-specific support groups and retreats, as well as a resiliency curriculum. One of our subspecialty endocrinology faculty serves as a fellowship coach, assisting residents bound for fellowship with their career paths and fellowship applications. Additionally, we have faculty focused on supporting resident scholarly work, such as research, quality improvement projects, and case reports. We have endowed faculty positions in geriatrics and cardiology to provide additional teaching support. This structure allows us to offer a rich learning environment for residents to grow and learn.

We are excited to meet you and share our unique program with you!
