Procedure Rotation
The department has created a unique Procedure Rotation for PGY-1 residents
to provide an early, focused experience in performing procedures central
to the care of medical patients.
Each PGY-1 resident participates in this robust
two-week experience during the first six months of residency training. This prepares are interns
to perform procedures on their critical care rotations. Because we do
not have fellows in our ICU, our residents have ample opportunities to
perform procedures such as central line placements and endotracheal intubations.
The specific aims of this rotation are to:
- Expand knowledge, skills, and comfort with airway management
- Become competent in performing central line placement, paracentesis, thoracentesis,
blood draws and other procedures.
- Develop specific knowledge relating to the risks, contraindications and
complications of common internal medicine procedures.
- Practice bedside point-of-care ultrasound one-on-one with a skilled instructor.
The rotation provides physicians-in-training the opportunity to move toward
independent practice of medicine.
