As a rural training program, residents complete their first-year hospital
rotations with the St. Peter Family Medicine Residency program interns at
Providence St. Peter Hospital. Second and third-year rotations are done predominately at
Providence Centralia Hospital.
Residents have inpatient and obstetrical rotations in all three years to
develop the skills to continue practicing full-spectrum medicine post-graduate.
While at Providence Centralia Hospital, residents enjoy the autonomy they
receive while working in a small community hospital.
Obstetrical Experiences:
Residents care for prenatal patients in their continuity clinic and are
involved in their deliveries and postpartum care.
Residents spend additional time with our obstetrical group in their office
to gain skills in managing obstetrical patients in a high volume practice
in Centralia.
Residents have rotations in Obstetrics in all 3 years. While at Providence
Centralia Hospital, residents receive a lot of autonomy, working directly
with their attendings.
Residents cover call during their rotations in their 2nd and 3rd years
during their obstetrical rotations to come first assist for any c-sections.
OB Track: Residents can opt to participate in the obstetrical track and utilize elective
time to gain additional obstetrical experience if desired to ensure they
can obtain ACGME competency in obstetrical care. This track allows more
time with the our obstetricians, more flexibility during OB rotations
and the opportunity to participate in Adolescent OB group with the St
Peter Family Medicine Program.
Pediatric Experiences:
In additional to caring for pediatric patients in continuity clinic, residents
have several other experiences in Pediatrics.
Residents participate in Inpatient Pediatric rotations at Providence St
Peter Hospital in their 1st and 2nd years with both Family Medicine attendings
and Pediatric attendings from Seattle Children's Hospital caring for pediatrics
and newborns in the Special Care Nursery.
Residents have ambulatory pediatric experiences in their 1st year rotating
with various pediatric specialists including pulmonology and abuse intervention.
In the 2nd year, residents rotate through the Pediatric Emergency Department
at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma. They additionally rotate
with Northwest Pediatrics in Centralia for urgent care shifts.
As part of an elective experience, residents can participate in Newborn
Call at Providence Centralia Hospital to round on newborn babies, manage
newborn resuscitations and any acute issues for newborns while on this rotation.
Inpatient Experiences:
Residents have rotations in Inpatient Medicine in all 3 years. In their
first year, residents rotate with the Family Medicine service as well
as with the hospitalist service at Providence St Peter Hospital.
Residents rotate with the hospitalist service at Providence Centralia Hospital
in their 2nd and 3rd year. At Providence Centralia Hospital, there is
an open 6 -bed ICU so residents can gain additional experience caring
for complex critically ill patients.
Residents have night inpatient rotations in their 1st and 2nd years of
residency.
At Providence Centralia Hospital, residents have the opportunity to participate
in inpatient procedural skills during their rotations or with additional
elective time.
Emergency Medicine Experiences:
Residents rotate in the Emergency Department at Providence Centralia Hospital
all 3 years of residency.
Additionally, residents rotate through the Pediatric Emergency Department
at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in their 2nd year.
Resident Call:
Obstetrics Rotation in 2nd and 3rd year: Overnight C-section call two nights/week
Clinic in 3rd year: After hours community phone call for clinic patients
Orientation & Health Systems Management
In July and September of intern year, all interns have two separate 2 week
orientation blocks combined with the St Peter Family Medicine & Summit
Pacific interns.
At the end of the 2nd year, residents join together again from all three programs for a rotation
to prepare for the last year of residency. This block is called Health
Systems Management and includes topics on community medicine, practice
management, and time to work on scholarly and quality improvement activities.

"The learning environment of our clinic in a rural setting is very
strong. The hospital training we get is beyond what someone in a rural
track would expect because we get to rotate at two different hospitals,
Providence St. Peter and Providence Centralia." -
Benjamin May, DO, class of 2020
