PGY1/PGY2/MHA Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Fellowship

Program Overview

ASHP AccreditedThe Department of Pharmacy Services at Providence South Puget Sound is proud to offer an accredited two-year combined PGY1/PGY2/MHA Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency in collaboration with the University of Providence School of Health Professions. This program will train residents to assume senior management, supervisory and leadership responsibilities within health-system pharmacy.

During the first year of training, you will be a member of the PGY1-Pharmacy Residency class at Providence St. Peter Hospital. You will be expected to meet the requirements of that residency program.

During the second year, you will complete the requirements of the PGY2-Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency program. You also will participate in all aspects of administration and management of pharmacy services within Providence South Puget Sound.

Your Master of Health Administration (MHA) coursework will be completed over the span of the two-year residency.

Upon completion of the PGY1/PGY2/MHA program, you will spend a third year as an Administrative Fellow, Pharmacy Services for one year. As part of the Pharmacy Leadership team, the Administrative Fellow will have administrative responsibility and authority for assigned areas within Providence South Puget Sound.

Candidates accepted into the three-year Providence St. Peter Hospital Pharmacy Administrative Residency and Fellowship are graduate students simultaneously enrolled in the MHA Program at the University of Providence School of Health Professions.

  • PGY1 Purpose Statement: "PGY1 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies."
  • PGY2 Purpose Statement: "PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available."

Total commitment for the program is 36 months:

  • Year 1: PGY1 Pharmacy Practice
  • Year 2: PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership
  • Complete requirements for MHA degree
  • Year 3: Administrative Fellow (work commitment)

Financial Compensation

Pharmacy residents are employees of Providence and will qualify for employee benefits, including: Medical, Prescription, Vision, Dental, and paid time off. Administrative leave and appropriate travel reimbursements are provided for ASHP Midyear & Spring Residency Conference meeting attendance.

These amounts are subject to change based on market surveys.

  • Year 1 stipend: $67,725
  • Year 2 stipend: $72,800
  • Year 3 salary (Admin Fellow): Pharmacist salary
