Clinical Experience

Our clinical practice is a private practice high-volume Gastrointestinal & Minimally Invasive Surgery Center. The fellows clinical experience will concentrate on all aspects of foregut (esophageal and gastric surgery) including, but not limited to:

  • Diagnostic testing
  • Esophageal physiology
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic flexible endoscopy
  • Laparoscopic and open surgery and care of these patients
  • Anti-reflux surgery
  • Repair of hiatal and paraoesophageal hernia
  • Achalasia
  • Esophageal and gastric malignancies
  • Interventional flexible endoscopy techniques and procedures, including endoscopic mucosal resection, endoscopic submucosal dissection, radio-frequency ablation, dilation, stent placement, endoscopic suturing and per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM).

Previous fellows have accumulated a clinical experience of between 200 and 350 advanced laparoscopic surgeries and several hundred flexible endoscopies including interventional endoscopy.

Clinical Rotations

Fellows have the following rotation opportunities available to them to supplement their specific interests and education:

  • Bariatric surgery rotation intended to train the fellow to master both Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy
  • Hepatobiliary surgery opportunities to gain exposure to duodenal and pancreatic procedures required with certain gastric cancer resections

Tumor Boards, M&M and Journal Clubs

Weekly Multi-disciplinary GI Tumor Boards

Fellows are able to attend, present, and actively participate in the discussion of challenging cases and determination of the best possible treatment plan.

Advanced GI – Foregut Morbidity and Mortality

Fellows will attend monthly morbidity and mortality conferences allowing fellows to join program and clinical faculty in discussing ways to improve all aspects of care based on actual patient experiences.

Journal Clubs

Fellows will attend regularly scheduled journal clubs in a "night on the town" setting for a lively interaction between faculty and fellows.
