Can you explain the WSU affiliation?
The pharmacy department at Holy Family Hospital has an established relationship with the Washington State University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences located in Spokane WA. Our proximity to the campus helps to provide a great experience for residents participating in our program. Residents provide onsite support for pharmacy students throughout the year. These opportunities include helping precept students, leading journal clubs and participating in chalk talks and case presentations. Opportunities for residents to provide didactic and small group education to first- through third-year students are also available. A teaching certificate is offered to residents completing this program.
What is life like in Spokane?
Holy Family Hospital is located in Spokane, in Eastern Washington, part of the Inland Northwest. Spokane is a city full of community involvement and experiences all 4 seasons which allows for multiple outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, and golf. It is also home to various shopping, restaurants, concert venues, and sporting events.
What is the staffing requirement?
Residents are expected to staff every other weekend starting the weekend after Labor Day in September. They will also staff one major holiday, one minor holiday, one week, and up to five additional evening shifts throughout the year. Staffing positions typically involve central drug distribution, order verification, and IV product checking. This work experience in combination with clinical rotations produces well-rounded highly capable acute care pharmacists. Residents work independently in these staffing shifts but are always supported by pharmacist preceptors/staff.
