Swedish Sponsored Fellowship Programs

PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program

PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

Swedish Medical Center’s ASHP-accredited PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program has been training the next generation of critical care pharmacy leaders since 2020. Our mission is to create an environment for residents to master critical care pharmacotherapy, develop their own progressive practice, and lead the profession forward through innovation, education, and collaboration. We want our residents to feel both challenged and supported as they take ownership of their growth and aspirations. Training at a community health system within Washington State affords our residents the opportunity to practice autonomously at the top of their license as an essential stakeholder within the healthcare team. We currently offer 1 PGY2 critical care pharmacy resident position.

Program Overview

Our Program

PGY2 critical care residents rotate through 7 specialty critical care areas and select 2 elective rotations. Core rotations are 6 weeks in length, apart
from a 3-week orientation. Elective rotations can last 3-6 weeks, depending on resident interest and site availability. Two full project weeks are
allocated throughout the year based on rotation availability and pertinent deadlines, in addition to project days the first day of each internal
rotation (unless the rotation follows a full project week). Any leftover weeks can be used for a third elective or as bonus project time.

Teaching Opportunities

With our PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program, Pharmacy Internship Program, and affiliations with several pharmacy schools across the nation, PGY2 critical care residents have ample opportunity to teach and precept pharmacy learners. Didactic lecture opportunities are also available through University of Washington’s Pharmacy Teaching Certificate program and Seattle University Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program. We require our residents to complete a teaching certificate program as part of their PGY2 critical care residency (optional if obtained during PGY1).

Additional Requirements

• Active membership on Residency Advisory, Residency Interview, Critical Care, and Pulmonary Embolism Response Team committees
• One journal club per rotation
• One patient case presentation per rotation

Staffing Commitment

PGY2 critical care residents staff every other weekend and rotate through SICU, NCCU, and CICU. Residents do not staff evenings or nights, do not work holidays, and are never on-call.
