The Swedish Addiction Medicine Fellowship is a one-year fellowship program in Seattle, Washington with a focus on pregnant and parenting families and underserved communities. Four fellows per year train at the Swedish Addiction Recovery Service (ARS), known for its expertise in treating substance use disorder in pregnancy, and rotate through a wide variety of urban and rural community settings. We believe in patient-centered, "no wrong door" care.
Our fellowship is open to applicants from all specialties. So far, we have had family medicine- and OB/GYN-trained fellows. At least one third of ARS’s patients are pregnant, though delivering babies is not a requirement for fellows. Fellows of any specialty are expected to provide prenatal care and coordinate around the delivery – for example, supporting parents and helping with Child Protective Services work.
ARS offers inpatient recovery treatment for pregnant people at our dedicated unit at Swedish’s Ballard campus. We also provide treatment for delivering and postpartum mothers and babies at Swedish’s main campus at First Hill in addition to addiction consultations for medical, surgical and psychiatric patients throughout Swedish’s multi-hospital system.
In the outpatient setting, we offer longitudinal addiction specialty care in our own dedicated clinic. In collaboration with the Swedish Cherry Hill Family Medicine Residency, ARS has an innovative drop-in clinic, providing prenatal and ongoing care for pregnant and parenting people with substance use disorders and their children.
The fellows’ weekly schedule generally consists of one half-day each of ARS and primary specialty clinic, two days at ARS’s services, and two days of “external” rotations. The fellows also take night call for ARS approximately every six weeks.
The Swedish Addiction Medicine Fellowship accepts applications through ERAS. For letters of recommendation, three is traditional, but we require a minimum of two. If you will be coming to fellowship straight from residency, we require that one of the letters be from your residency’s program director.
