Our year-long, ASHP-accredited PGY-1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program has been training pharmacy residents since 1990. Our residents spend most of their time performing direct outpatient care services in the Providence Medical Group (PMG) clinic in Monroe, Washington, working collaboratively with all members of the primary care team. All required learning experiences in our program are longitudinal, which allows for the development of both clinical skills and patient relationships which are right at the heart of ambulatory care. Our program’s design supports and encourages our residents in building the skills, knowledge, confidence, and proficiency that are essential to becoming effective clinical pharmacists in both ambulatory care and community practice settings. Graduates of our program are well-prepared and positioned to manage chronic diseases under collaborative drug therapy agreements; work as part of a multidisciplinary, patient-centered healthcare team; contribute to innovative outpatient pharmacy practice; pursue a PGY-2 residency in ambulatory care; and become board-certified in ambulatory care.
Providence Northwest Washington is a residency program designed and conducted in a manner that supports the ASHP Residency Purpose Statement: "To build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop community‐based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications."
