Residency Program Policies

We would also like to highlight our policy on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our residency program:

1. AI may be utilized as a supplemental tool but not for original thought creation.
2. AI should never be used in place of healthcare recommendations and peer-reviewed research.
3. Use of AI must be disclosed including what was used and how it was used, and that the information has been validated
4. It is not appropriate to use AI to analyze data for projects and MUE, as learning data analysis is an important part of residency.
5. Specific examples:
   1. Topic discussions: resident must be able to critically assess literature and create own summary – AI may be used to search for additional resources or create visual summary based off of resident’s work
   2. Drug Info questions: resident must be able to critically assess literature and create own summary – AI may be used as editing/formatting tool
   3. Powerpoint presentations: resident must be able to compile relevant information for presentation – AI may be used as editing/formatting tool or to generate slides from resident’s work
6. For anything not specifically addressed, consult with preceptor prior to using AI
7. The preceptor has the discretion to limit/prohibit the use of AI in any capacity during their rotation
8. Preceptors are encouraged to use AI checking tools as needed to validate resident deliverables
9. AI systems have increased energy demands which negatively impact the environment. Residents should take this into consideration and practice good stewardship.
10. The use of AI must align with current Providence policies
