The Department of Medical Education is an academic unit integrated within a community based medical center. We are an integral part of the Providence Portland Medical Center and its missions. The Department is dedicated to providing high quality personalized education for our residents, visiting medical students and staff while also providing outstanding clinical care in a community setting. Our dedicated faculty take pride in developing innovative methods to educate our trainees and disseminating this knowledge so that others may benefit from our lessons learned. We have a robust Quality Improvement program which serves to educate our trainees in these essential skills and also helps our medical center improve the care of our patients.
Providence Portland Medical Center has a longstanding commitment to supporting medical education, particularly resident training, as evidenced by our high faculty (24) to resident (30) ratio. This commitment is a major source of strength for our Department and has allowed us to recruit and retain outstanding medical educators. We also benefit greatly from the enthusiastic support of our subspecialty colleagues and hospitalists who actively participate in our teaching program.
Providence Portland Medical Center’s dedication to education is exemplified by the endowed Garnjobst Chair of Medical Education which supports our Department Chair. You can learn more about Dr. Garnjobst and the endowed Chair named in his honor by following the link on the left side of the page.
