Our commitment to caring for those with the greatest need is rooted in an amazing legacy that began in the Northwest in 1856. As part of Providence Health & Services, we identify our work as a ministry, embracing our responsibility to provide for the needs of communities across Washington. We take pride in advancing our Mission and demonstrating our Core Values of respect, compassion, justice, excellence, and stewardship in our interactions with each other and those we serve.
Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children's Hospital is an acute-care, general and referral center. It offers a full range of adult and pediatric care for 644 beds. We are consistently recognized as a leader in health care quality, safety and technology. The medical center’s size and scope offer numerous opportunities for learning.
Our commitment to patient care has decentralized clinical pharmacists providing services to the entire hospital. The pharmacists are relied on as a valuable member of the care team. Pharmacists provide oversight and input in medication therapy by participating in profile review and intervention, dosing protocols, drug information, code blue, hospital and medical staff education, committee participation, protocol development and medication utilization evaluation. These longstanding practices have resulted in excellent relationships with our medical and nursing staffs.
Established in 1990, our Spokane, WA pharmacy residency program has a long history of producing competent, well-rounded pharmacy clinicians. The technicians, staff pharmacists, preceptors and management team are very supportive of residents as they transition from students to practicing pharmacists. Residents will have the opportunity to work with strong preceptors on each rotation.
Our residency program offers experience on a variety of patient care models: academic teaching, attending physicians and hospitalists, and floor-based rotations. A wide variety of prescriptive authority protocols ensure effective and efficient care while allowing the resident to develop skills in practicing independently. These include: IV to PO, renal dosing, aminoglycosides (neonatal, pediatric and adult), vancomycin (neonatal, pediatric and adult), lab ordering, heparin induced thrombocytopenia, TPN and warfarin.
Staffing requirements provide hands-on experience which exposes residents to real-life clinical and operational situations; you will gain experience in week long and weekend clinical services and core pharmacy services (order verification/IV room). A strong commitment to order entry and clinical orientation/training, along with ongoing support, ensure successful staffing experiences. This prepares graduates to be able to provide traditional and advanced pharmaceutical care services to a wide variety of patients in diverse practice settings.
