Residents and Fellows whose education and continuing medical education emphasis falls within gastrointestinal, laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery are welcome at PSSI. Here, we offer skills training for FLS and FES as well as housing a robotic simulator (Mimic dV-Trainer) for basic and advanced robotic surgical skills training.
Practicing surgeons who would also like to develop or refine their laparoscopic and endoscopic skills would also find the simulation center a positive catalyst to their continuing education. As mentoring surgeons, they can also refer their residents and fellows to PSSI.
The FLS Laparoscopic Trainer System assists the development of psychomotor skills and dexterity require of surgical residents and fellows during the performance of basic laparoscopic surgery. Our facility houses 2 FLS Trainer Systems and will allow residents and fellows to practice the five skills needed for FLS certification:
Funded jointly through FSIE and Providence, PSSI is recognized nationally as an official SAGES Fundamentals for Endoscopic Surgery Test Center. In accordance with this advanced program, PSSI houses the most advanced endoscopic surgical virtual reality testing equipment available. The GI Mentor simulator provides multiple training opportunities with realistic scenarios of clinical situations, ranging from simple diagnostic procedures to advanced interventional ERCP and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS). The GI Mentor software includes a comprehensive library of modules with more than 120 tasks and virtual patient cases that can be tailored to the fellows and residents training needs including:
The dV-Trainer® is the original robotic surgery simulator. It remains the only stand-alone robotic simulator that has been independently validated in over a dozen published studies. According to research performed by numerous independent academic and clinical teams, the dV-Trainer® closely reproduces the look and feel of operating with the da Vinci® system. In order to make the dV-Trainer® the most realistic da Vinci® emulator possible, Mimic has licensed Intuitive Surgical® technology related to the da Vinci® robot kinematics, instrument design, vision display, multimedia content, and API.
