Message from the Chief Residents

Jeff and Jemie

As Chiefs for the 2019-2020 academic year, we welcome you to our website! We are proud to represent a dynamic group of residents, faculty and clinical staff in a residency program that is at the forefront in of the patient-centered medical home. Providence Oregon Family Medicine has exceeded our expectations – working in a community-based setting allows for collegial and personal interactions, and at the same time we have access to the benefits of a larger health system.

Our program nurtures the diverse interests of the residents with interests ranging from rural or international medicine to addiction, geriatric medicine or health policy. Both clinics have unique opportunities and serve slightly different populations. Our Southeast clinic is located in a section of Portland with significant language and cultural diversity and our Milwaukie clinic is on the Providence Milwaukie Hospital campus about 10 minutes south of Portland. The Milwaukie clinic is continuing a pilot program called Project Nurture, which serves our pregnant population who are also struggling with addiction and is in the process of rolling out the IT Matters program to provide comprehensive substance use disorder care and maintenance therapy. The teaching kitchen on the Milwaukie campus continues to be a fantastic resource for patients at both clinics to learn about meal preparation and healthy food choices. Both clinics are also medical home pilots and offer experiences with case management, integrated behavioral health, low-cost counseling and group classes.

As a specialty, we are encountering an even broader challenge – how to define the future of family medicine. As newly trained physicians, how do we face the inevitable changes in the field of medicine? This residency, with its forward-thinking and innovative faculty, helps provide a solid framework for residents to explore where family medicine will be in the next decade and beyond. Our role as Chiefs is to act as a bridge between faculty and residents. For the upcoming year, our goals will focus on enhancing communication, resident well-being, and promoting core didactic education.

We look forward to meeting you and joining you as colleagues on your own journey.
