Required Conferences

Every Tuesday from 12:00 to 1:00 pm, our Fellow Education Conference will be held at the Downtown office to review the core topics in Colon and Rectal Surgery. This will include both topics from the ASCRS textbook as well as up to date research topics and M&M to discuss team complications. It is expected that elective surgery will not be scheduled during that time. This is considered to be good preparation for oral exams in both General Surgery and in Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Journal Club will be held on the third Wednesday of each month, usually at 6:00pm at a local establishment of higher learning. A reminder should be emailed to all those on the JC email list at least 2 weeks prior to the meeting, with the name of the sponsor and the place, so this can get on everyone’s calendar. The fellow will be responsible for the review of five or six pertinent articles published during the prior month. The papers should be obtained in PDF format and distributed by email to the Journal Club email list at least a week prior to the conference, and discussion will be presented by the fellow, with comments and perspective by the attendings. If, in the opinion of the fellow, there are more than 5 articles which are of sufficient importance as to merit discussion, he or she should obtain these articles as well, and assign them to general surgery fellows or members of the attending staff. Other fellows, from Swedish and other hospitals, are encouraged to attend journal club, and if they do so, they are requested to present their analysis of one of the chosen articles. The colorectal fellow is responsible for choosing articles, scheduling the Journal Club meetings, finding a venue and a financial sponsor, and corresponding with the sponsors. Assistance with this from the Program Director is available if requested.

The General Surgery Morbidity and Mortality Conference is held at Swedish Hospital every Thursday from 12:00-1:30pm and provides valuable lessons in the experience of our staff and others in the management of colorectal and other surgical disease. The ACGME Colon and Rectal Fellow presents at this conference every third Thursday of the month.

GI Pathology / Tumor Board – Swedish Hospital – every 2nd and 4th Tuesday, 7-8am, A Floor Conference Room in the Arnold Building.
