Our Residents

The residents at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center (PSVMC) are a diverse and enthusiastic group. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds and each brings a unique perspective to residency. During this formative experience, the residents themselves are an integral part of the supportive and nurturing learning environment at PSVMC. The small size of the program, the presence of talented peers, and the humane call schedule all combine to allow important relationships to develop and flourish.

Message from the Chief Resident

Hello there!

Welcome to our residency program webpage! We hope you find this website helpful, and thank you for considering us.

When I came out here for the first time for my residency interview four years ago, I not only immediately noticed just how beautiful Portland and the Pacific Northwest is, but the tangible camaraderie among the residents and faculty at this program. I quickly discovered the sense everyone here would really want to get to know who I am. To help me navigate the exciting, complex and sometimes challenging world of internal medicine residency with rock-solid training, academic curiosity and lighthearted fun along the way. I felt like this was the place that could help me along the path to become the physician I have always wanted to be. I was absolutely right.

After an incredible three years training, I am thrilled to remain a part of this program and stay on after graduation as Chief Resident. To remain amongst the many friends and exemplary colleagues I’ve gained during my time here is truly an honor and a privilege. We are excited to share with you a bit about who we are and what makes Providence St. Vincent an outstanding place to continue your professional journey through medicine.

We provide a unique learning experience being a smaller program working in a large hospital. Providence St. Vincent Medical Center has 550 beds and is home to the busiest emergency department in the Portland metro area accommodating more than 80,000 visits annually. As one of the main tertiary referral centers in the region, we take care of complex patients from all throughout Oregon and southern Washington and collaborate with many other area hospitals. We’ve added a brand new, expanded medical ICU where you will spend time learning from our fantastic intensivists and our Emergency Department is undergoing it’s own remodel to meet the needs of our patients.

Our residents are an integral, well supported part of Providence St. Vincent. Residents benefit from a robust academic learning environment but with a personal, community feel. Our stellar core faculty, hospitalist colleagues and sub-specialist physicians work closely with residents and are all passionate teachers, mentors and advocates.

You will be immersed in our primary care clinic as a PCP experiencing a well-functioning, medical home model to care for patients you will come to know closely, almost like family. We have strong educational conferences offered each day and a noteworthy Quality Improvement Curriculum. Many resident QI projects have directly contributed to changing system policy, patient care workflow and overall added to the value of clinical practice in our hospital and clinic. All these opportunities allow our residents to be well-prepared to join any field: primary care, hospital medicine or sub-specialty training in fellowship.

Outside of work, we are lucky to be living in Portland; a vibrant city filled with culture, music and restaurants surrounded by dense forests, rivers and as many outdoor activities you can think of. A wonderful combination that is sure to recharge your batteries when needed.

We are very proud of our close-knit residency at Providence St. Vincent. I couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to train here. This is a program where you will be given all the tools needed to succeed as a physician, learn not only more about medicine but also of yourself, and be supported all along the way. I hope you will consider joining us here and discover that for yourself.

Thank you,
Nicholas Gates, MD
