PGY1 Pharmacy Residency - Portland

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program has been accredited by ASHP since 1994, offering residents the opportunity to participate in collaborative, integrated care in health system pharmacy practice. Residents apply advanced practice-based skills, expand leadership skills, participate in professional organizations, and participate in innovative approaches to delivery of care.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is one program with two sites – Providence Portland Medical Center (PPMC) and Providence St. Vincent Medical Center (PSVMC) – which are both about 500-beds. Both PPMC and PSVMC have implemented a layered learning model, with pharmacy student/resident/attending pharmacist teams on each of the core clinical services, structured in the same way as the medical education model. The teams work collaboratively with other clinicians to provide patient care and improve medication management across the continuum of care. The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program provides broad experience and confidence in practice-based skills across diverse practice settings while offering the opportunity to obtain focused experience in areas of interest.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program offers 11 resident positions. Each resident has a home site: five PGY1 residents at PPMC and six PGY1 residents at PSVMC. At PPMC, there is also a PGY1/PGY2 Health-System Administration resident, whose PGY1 year is identical to the PGY1 Pharmacy residency with the addition of MBA coursework.

All 11 residents from PPMC and PSVMC are part of a single PGY1 program. All residents rotate throughout our health system and come together regularly for meetings, conferences, and projects. Though each site has its own NMS matching number, candidates are encouraged to rank both sites when applying. See additional application information under Applying to Providence.

Here are some commonly asked questions:

  • At which site do I complete my rotations?
Residents complete core rotations at their home site. Elective rotations may be offered at one or multiple sites. For example, emergency medicine is offered at both sites, heart transplant at PSVMC, and inpatient oncology at PPMC. Residents may complete elective rotations wherever they are offered.
  • What are the staffing requirements?
Residents have a longitudinal staffing experience that includes clinical and operational practice (de-centralized clinical services and Central Pharmacy distribution). Staffing occurs at the resident’s home site. Residents staff Saturday and Sunday every other weekend. Former residents consistently note that the staffing experience is one of the most important opportunities to grow in autonomy and confidence as a hospital pharmacist.
  • Am I allowed to switch staffing shifts with another co-resident?
Yes, if the switch is approved by your site manager, switching is permitted.
  • Do I have to staff on holidays?
Yes, each resident is required to staff one of the four major holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day. Residents work together to select their holidays at the beginning of the year so that they can determine their schedules and travel plans accordingly.
  • Should I submit an application to both sites?
Yes, candidates are encouraged to apply to both PPMC and PSVMC sites for the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program (for a single PhORCAS application fee). The two sites interview as one program, so candidates selected for an interview will interview with both sites together. Candidates are encouraged to rank both sites during the ranking process using the respective ASHP. See additional application information under Applying to Providence.
