Applicant Recruitment and Selection Requirements The Fellowship Training Program in Colon and Rectal Surgery was established in 1995 and has grown to accept 2 fellows a year. The fellowship year runs from August 1st – July 31st. Candidates for the program must have successfully completed 5 years of an approved ACGME General Surgical Residency. Applications for the position and interviews must be completed by November of the year prior to beginning training. The selection of fellows is made through the Colorectal Residency Matching Program as approved by the Program Directors’ Association of Colon and Rectal Surgery Residencies. Candidates are notified of selection in November by the NRMP.
The residency offers a balance of anorectal surgery, abdominal surgery and endoscopy. The faculty members of Swedish Colon and Rectal Clinic and The Polyclinic are all Diplomates of the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Each year we perform more than 500 colonoscopic procedures, 150 major abdominal operations and more than 1000 anorectal procedures (both in the operating room and in the outpatient settings). In addition, a considerable portion of the fellow’s time is spent in the clinic where over 3,000 visits occur annually. The fellow is exposed to a wide cross section of all areas of colorectal surgery. The training year provides extensive experience in the medical and surgical management of benign and malignant conditions of the colon, rectum, and anus.
