Full Accreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation April 2022
The one-year General Practice Residency program at Sacred Heart Medical Center is dedicated to providing dental treatment to mentally and physically challenged patients, medically complicated patients, and the under-served in our community. Specialized training will focus on helping the resident learn to consider not only the patient’s dental needs, but also how the patient’s underlying medical conditions will affect the delivery of his or her care.
Our residents spend time at two separate facilities, both new and state-of-the-art. One clinic is at Sacred Heart Medical Center, and the other is owned and operated by CHAS Health. Residents rotate between the two facilities, training under our dental faculty. Residents will also participate in off-service clinical rotations under the supervision of our medical staff, which will include internal medicine, emergency medicine, cardiology, and anesthesia.
Our residents will learn to interact with medical professionals to manage complicating factors to dental treatment, such as those associated with oncology patients, patients with underlying cardiovascular disease, patients planned for major cardiothoracic surgery, patients with dentofacial trauma, patients with significant head and neck space infections of dental origin, and patients with coagulopathies.
Residents will gain significant experience in outpatient care, as well as conducting inpatient consultation and care. Training will include conscious sedation, treatment planning and managing more complicated dental procedures, as well as practice management.
Our goal is to prepare the residents to be a more diverse clinical practitioner, with an enhanced skill set to be able to treat patients in both the office and hospital environment.
