The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Providence Portland Medical Center (PPMC) offers 5 resident positions. Our PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program has been accredited by ASHP since 1994, offering residents the opportunity to participate in collaborative, integrated care in health system pharmacy practice. Residents apply advanced practice-based skills, expand leadership skills, and participate in innovative approaches to delivery of care.

PPMC is a 483-bed community teaching hospital and tertiary care center located in the North Tabor neighborhood of Portland, OR. Established in 1941, PPMC is notable for excellence in patient care and research in areas such as cancer, heart, orthopedics, women's health, rehabilitation services, and behavioral health. The medical center has comprehensive oncology services in the Providence Cancer Center Institute Franz Clinic, one of the few sites that performs CAR-T cell therapy on the West Coast.

The Department of Pharmacy at PPMC offers well-established clinical pharmacy services across a wide variety of patient populations. The department utilizes a layered learning model, with pharmacy student, resident, and attending pharmacist teams on each of the core clinical services, structured in the same way as the medical education model. These teams work collaboratively with other clinicians to provide patient care and optimize medication management across the continuum of care.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program at PPMC provides broad experience and confidence in practice-based skills across diverse practice settings while offering the opportunity to obtain focused experience in areas of interest. Pharmacy residents can also complete learning experiences at other Providence hospitals and clinics in the Portland area, offering a wide variety of elective experiences. The residents at PPMC are also connected with other Providence PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residents in the Portland area.

• Are PGY1 Pharmacy residents at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center part of the same program?
  No, as of the 2025-2026 residency year, the PGY1 Pharmacy residency programs at Providence Portland Medical Center and Providence St. Vincent Medical Center will operate as independent programs, as both medical centers can support their own programs. However, residents of both programs will still be able to take elective rotations at either medical center, and the residents will still be connected to each other throughout the year through various Portland area Providence events and projects.
• What are the staffing requirements?
  Residents have a longitudinal staffing experience that includes clinical and operational practice (de-centralized clinical services and Central Pharmacy distribution). Residents staff Saturday and Sunday every other weekend (with some breaks for conferences and holidays). Former residents consistently note that the staffing experience is one of the most important opportunities to grow in autonomy and confidence as a hospital pharmacist.
• Am I allowed to switch staffing shifts with another co-resident?
  Yes, if the switch is approved by your site manager, switching is permitted.
• Am I required to staff on holidays?
  Yes, each resident is required to staff one of the following major holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day. Residents work together to select their holidays at the beginning of the year so that they can determine their schedules and plans accordingly.
