Medical Student Rotations

The Providence Portland Internal Medicine Residency Program is a major teaching affiliate of the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and is also affiliated with the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine (WSU). PPMC routinely hosts third year students from both medical schools for their required Internal Medicine clerkship rotations; fourth year medical students from both schools also come to PPMC for Medicine sub-internships and ID and ICU elective rotations. There are three to four medical students participating on the clinical services at any given time.

In addition the Providence Portland Internal Medicine Residency Program draws medical students from across the U.S. for the Internal Medicine sub-internships and the elective ID and ICU rotations.

The educational program for the PPMC Internal Medicine clerkship rotations is spearheaded by Dr. Mary Anne Nidiry. Clerkship students are integrated into the day-to-day workflow, educational rounds, and the educational conferences of their ward teams. Specific mentorship is provided on their written and orally presented cases. Additional student-specific teaching sessions are provided by the medical education faculty and the hospitalist clinician educator faculty.

Fourth year students may rotate through the Medicine wards on fourth year sub-internships, on the Infectious Diseases consult service or in the ICU. An emphasis on learning, feedback, and practical experience is a key element of the clinical experience at PPMC. Dr. Mary Anne Nidiry directs the inpatient ward sub-internship experience. The hospitalist clinician educator faculty and the medical education faculty serve as the supervisors and educators. The Oregon Clinic Pulmonary/Critical Care physicians serve as supervisors and educators in the very active ICU. The PPMC Infectious Diseases Consultant group serve as supervisors and educators during the ID rotation.
