The Clinical Pastoral Education program at Providence Alaska Medical Center is accredited by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) to offer Level I, Level II and Certified Educator CPE programs.

CPE Summer Intensive Units

CPE Summer Intensive units introduce students to the clinical method of learning and crisis ministry. Participants are typically seminarians, clergy exploring chaplaincy and/or qualified lay people discerning a sense of call into professional ministry. Summer CPE units at Providence Alaska Medical Center are 12 weeks in length, generally beginning June 1st and ending in late August.

Dates may change as the times draw closer. Applications are received and students accepted on a space available basis. We begin receiving applications approximately six months in advance of the start of the units. There is a $25 non-refundable application fee due at the time of application. Please send check or money order in U.S. funds made payable to PAMC-CPE.

CPE Residency

The CPE residency program at Providence Alaska Medical Center is made up of four consecutive units:

  • Fall CPE Residency Unit: September - December
  • Winter CPE Residency Unit: January - March
  • Spring CPE Residency Unit: March - May
  • Summer CPE Residency Unit: June - August

We accept students on a unit-by-unit basis with the intent that a student will complete the entire year. However, if space becomes available at the beginning of any unit we may fill positions for CPE residency beginning in January or March. One prior unit of CPE is required prior to entering into the CPE residency program.

Certified Educator CPE

Application for this and the unit dates will be determined at the time of application to the Certified Educator CP program.

International Applicants for CPE require a lengthy and involved process. Anyone interested in applying who are living outside the U.S., please refer to the instructions found on the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education website at www.acpe.edu. The deadlines for filing of applications by international students are strictly adhered to as outlined in that website. The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. is nationally recognized as an accrediting agency in the field of clinical pastoral education by the U.S. Secretary of Education through the Department of Education.

Providence Alaska Medical Center does not offer housing to CPE students. There are some referrals that can be made and it is suggested that students contact their faith community in Anchorage to determine if any housing would be available through your denomination.

We are a Catholic health care provider started by the Sisters of Providence and work in concordance with the Ethical & Religious Directives (ERD). In our department are a diverse group of chaplains as well as residents and interns from a variety of faith traditions and cultural backgrounds.
